Spelling

Spelling definitions are copied every Monday by the students after I have gone over the meanings and in some cases, given a mini-lesson to reinforce their meanings when we get to the SOL generated words. Choices are given out every Monday and started in class if students get the definitions copied in time. If students finish their choice in class, either Miss Harcum or myself will put a note in the agenda stating that the paper is in, give the date, and initial it. There are three choices given every week; however, students always have the choice of writing their words five times each. Spelling test are given every Friday. Once we get through the first nine-weeks, I will be having certain students pretesting on Monday to see if they can get an A on the week's spelling test. If they are able to do so, they will be given an alternative list and alternative assignments that require a great deal more work. Because the work is more difficult and requires more, alternative list students will not be required to turn in their assignments until Wednesday and they will be required to look up their own definitions. Their spelling test is also a called test and definitions are required to be known as well. If a student given the alternative list begins to falter, I will pull them back to the regular weekly spelling list.
